About LSS
In Response to Christ's Love,
Lutheran Social Services
Serves and cares for people in need.
The Lutheran Church has been serving and caring for people in need in New England for 140 years. It all began when a faithful Lutheran brewer by the name of Gottlieb Burkhardt took four orphans under his wing and created the Martin Luther Orphans' Home at Brook Farm. Another children's home followed in Avon, Massachusetts, and eventually, nursing homes were established in
Southbury, Connecticut and
Worcester, Massachusetts.
Services for refugees and
persons with disabilities were established in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1996, LSS launched
Good News Garage, the nation’s first program to solicit charitable car donations to benefit low income families in need of reliable transportation in order to achieve economic self-sufficiency.
Today, Lutheran Social Services administers more than 60 social services programs for people in need in all six New England states. Each day, the 1,800 employees of LSS serve approximately 5,000 clients.
LSS is a member of Lutheran Services in American (LSA), the nationwide network of Lutheran social ministry organizations that comprise the nation’s largest charity, serving one in 50 Americans.
The LSS Gift Catalog is just one way to support the people whom LSS serves. For more information about our services for children, adults and families in need throughout Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont, visit our website at
